Department of Automatic Control and System Engineering
What are the academic aspects in Automatic Control and System Engineering?
An understanding of aspects of computing, electronics, mechanical engineering and control principles will be obtained. They are supported by relevant aspects of other topics such as aeronautics, biomechanics and techniques for the analysis and design of complex systems and data. The precise mix of topics will depend on your degree choice and the specialisation selected.

Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering
What are the academic aspects in Chemical and Biological Engineering?
During first year, students’ knowledge of mathematics and chemistry are enhanced and principles of chemical such as design and laboratory work are introduced. In the second year, basics principals are developed through laboratory sessions. Students are able to choose their specializations from the list of Chemical Engineering related degrees.
How many contact hours per week for Chemical Engineering?
In first year, this course entails an average of 19 hours per week; which includes 3 hours of practical sessions in labs, 4 hours of tutorial/feedback sessions and the remaining hours are taken up by lectures.
Department of Civil and Structural Engineering
What are the academic aspects in Civil and Structural Engineering?
It gives students a strong grounding in main areas of civil engineering such as structures, water, geotechnics and environmental issues. In years 1 and 2 the two courses are identical. In years 3 and 4, Civil and Structural Engineering has a greater emphasis on multi-storey building design and offers structural engineering options. Civil Engineering has an emphasis on water and environmental engineering. Environmental engineers play a key role in maintaining the quality of our coastal waters and rivers, protecting our groundwater for drinking, cleaning up contaminated land in urban areas and designing regeneration schemes for areas that have been blighted by pollution.
How many contact hours per week for Civil and Structural Engineering?
14 hours per week on average (first year) excluding practical labs. Lab sessions usually take about 3 hours, 2-3 times a month.
Department of Computer Science
What are the academic aspects in Computer Science?
First year students are introduced to Java programming and to fundamentals of Software Engineering and Computer Science. They get to study the mathematical foundations of computer science and learn about networks and computer architectures. Some of the modules are free-choice which you can pick from across the University.
Progressing to second year, students learn functional programming, database technology, graphics and robotics. Mathematical aspects are explored in logic, computation and pattern recognition topics. More advanced aspects of software engineering such as systems analysis and design are covered. You will also learn about some of the professional, legal and ethical issues involved in computing.

Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering
What are the academic aspects in Electronic and Electrical Engineering?
All the degree programmes in the department share common core modules for the first 2 years such as mathematics, computing and electrical circuits and etc. This gives students a broad educational base in the subject. Towards the end of year 2, students can make their final choice of specialisations.
How many contact hours per week for Electronic and Electrical Engineering?
It is roughly about 14/15 hours a week, excluding the days for labs which usually lasted about 3 hours at a time.
Engineering Interdisciplinary Programmes Office (IPO)
Aerospace Engineering and Biomedical Engineering undergraduate courses are under IPO.
What are the academic aspects in Aerospace Engineering?
As the course is interdisciplinary, students will be taught by various lecturers who specialized in different areas, such as Applied Mathematics, Control and System engineering, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering etc.
There are 7 modules (120 credits) in total that are stretched throughout the first year. A couple of assignments to be completed, 1 exam before the start of spring semester and 6 end-of-year examinations.
There is a choice between Aero Mechanics (Mechanical, Structural and Material related) and Avionics (Control Systems and Electrical related).
Students who chose Aero Mechanics stream has a further choice in 3rd Year between Fluids and Materials.

How many contact hours per week for Aerospace Engineering?
There are 2 hours lecture and 1 hour tutorial for each module per week (most of the weeks). As for practical labs, each modules consists of 1-4 practical lab(s) per semester, and each lab session is 3 hours. In total there are about 21-23 hours per week. In addition, each student will be assigned to a personal tutor and he/she can seek the tutor for help during personal tutorial sessions.
What are the academic aspects in Bio Engineering?
Sheffield adopts a multidisciplinary approach where students get to study modules across the faculties of Engineering, Science and Medicine. There is a wide range of topics during the first year such as materials, computer modelling and living systems and tissue engineering.
How many contact hours per week for Bio Engineering?
There are 2 hours lecture for each module per week. Some modules have tutorials sessions. Modules related to sciences like biology or chemistry, consist of lab practical (about 2-3 per semester).
Department of Materials Science and Engineering
What are the academic aspects in Materials Science and Engineering?
Students study materials from atomic scale to large manufactured parts. They have to understand the scientific properties of materials, engineering performance of materials and materials processing. The fundamental study of the main areas of importance to material is done during year 1. More advanced subjects, applications of materials and processing are done in the subsequent years. Students are allowed to specialise in particular area of the subject as the go through the course.

Department of Mechanical Engineering
What are the academic aspects in Mechanical Engineering?
8 modules, 6 end-of-year examinations, and a number of assignments seemed to be a great relief after the transition from the fast-track lifestyle in college. This was soon proved wrong, as the ability of an engineer is not represented in quantity but in quality. Tertiary education, unlike the subject-wise study in secondary schools, provide knowledge in a continuous flow, where theories are interwoven with practices and applications. One of the reasons why the University of Sheffield has a high reputation in its Engineering Faculty is that the theoretical and practical sections are balanced in a way which maximizes understanding. The 8 modules in first year of Mechanical Engineering are divided nicely into 4 theoretical and 4 practical modules, which allow the theoretical knowledge to be consolidated through labs, workshop and various sessions involving teamwork.
How many contact hours per week for Mechanical Engineering?
17 hours per week on average (first year). This includes 5 hours of practical sessions (labs and design group work) and 2 hours of tutorial sessions where any academic or even personal enquiry can be discussed with tutor and colleagues.

Things to do around campus
Music, DJs and a night out with friends, if any of these interests you, exploring the Student Union and the West Street is always the right option for a perfect location.
A variety of restaurants spread all over the campus and you can always find the one which suits your taste. There are also galleries and museums within minutes of campus which are worth having a look at.

Is it important to buy all the recommended text books?
Buying text books can be quite an expense and hence this is a question that often comes up frequently. Go easy on the reading list. In all honesty, you are probably only going to read a few chapters from each book. A good idea would be to start going into lectures and see how often you will need to refer to the recommended books and then decide whether it would be a good idea for you to invest in some of the books. However, check the library in most cases before spending the extra money.
Does the university offer any sports facilities?
The university has incredible sporting facilities including fitness classes, football pitches, tennis courts, a gym, swimming pool etc. Some of these facilities are absolutely free of cost whilst others require a fee. For more information, visit:

The university website has a list of FAQ’s such as this one. If some of your questions don’t appear on these lists, it is worth applying for a mentor before the start of the semester. Mentors are usually second or third year students who have been trained by the university and are usually studying the same course as you. They will answer all your questions, you can also meet up with them frequently concerning any problems or challenges you face.

Cost of living in Sheffield?
Sheffield is a student friendly city and the cost of living is less here than about any other university town in the UK. Public transport includes busses and trams that have daily or weekly passes according to your convenience and within your budget.

Endcliffe, Ranmoor or city accommodation for first year?
This depends entirely on the type of person that you are. If you don’t fancy a long walk before lectures every morning and like to live in the city then I would recommend applying for accommodation in the city. It is only a 5 minute walk from campus and is more calm and quiet compared to Endcliffe and Ranmoor.
If you’ve already asked previous students on their opinion they will probably say ‘If you’re a fresher then endcliffe is the place to be’. Endcliffe is home to about 3500 students. It includes self-catered, catered, ensuite and shared bathroom accommodation; so there’s a range to pick from and you’ll definitely find something that matches your preference! The village store is a convenient store located in the complex along with The Edge, which includes a spacious dining room, café and the Edge bar. A lot of events such as yoga, fitness classes, movie nights and many more take place at the bar. However, it is about a 25 minute walk away from campus. There is always something going on at Endcliffe and it is a vibrant place to live in!
Lastly, Ranmoor. It does not include catered accommodation and is an extra 5 minutes from Endcliffe; hence the walk to campus is 30 minutes long! You will also have access to all events taking place at the Ridge Bar, which is similar to the Edge Bar. Ranmoor is slightly quieter than Endcliffe and has a balance between the loud nights and calm environment. Additionally, Endliffe and Ranmoor are close to bus stops and therefore, you can also take a bus to get to campus. Find more information on accommodation http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/accommodation.
Can I work whilst I’m studying?
International students are allowed to work part-time during term time and full-time during the holiday period. However, according to your student visa, you will not be allowed to work more than 20 hours per week during term-time.
The Student Job Shop has details of term-time and vacation job opportunities available in Sheffield. You can access 'myVacancies', the Careers Service vacancy database through MUSE. You can also get help and advice on preparing job applications and access information about working as a student. The Student Jobshop is run by the Careers Service in partnership with the Students´ Union.
