Just right before the Christmas holidays I was lucky to buy
a ticket for the Jaguar Land Rover Factory Tour which was organised by the
Electrical and Electronic Engineering society and I thought it would be useful
for you to know what the society organised and what is like to work at the
Jaguar Land Rover.
First of all, the factory is located in the Castle Bromwich
and it took us around two hours to get there by bus. I was delighted to know
that the trip was organised by some of the EEE lecturers who were with us for
the duration the trip. This shows an excellent engagement between students and
their lecturers outside of the lecture halls.
Talking about the factory itself, the reality outweighed my
expectations. I have seen how cars are built from scratch, from sheet metal to
a fully formed Jaguar. At first we went to an area of lower car body
manufacture, where the ABB robots perform their tasks of gluing and stitching
the components together. These processes do not produce any scrap material and
it results in a very strong connection between the parts. The robots accuracy
is quite literally on the millimetre scale and it was amazing to see robots
move centimetres apart from each other, during the transfer of a part. We
were also told that every JLR employee, apart from getting paid, is allowed to
take one Jaguar for the weekend for free.
For the final part of the visit we listened to a short talk
about a new electronic type of Jaguar and their worldwide partners and
customers.
