SURE – Sheffield Undergraduate Research Experience

Are you not SURE what to do after completing your degree? Are you not SURE if a PhD is the right option for you? Are you not SURE why I’m saying SURE a gazillion times? SUREly, you’ll know it all once you read this blog.

The Sheffield Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE, sorry had to!) is a program run across all the departments at the University of Sheffield where a group of students work on a six-week paid research project over a summer. It is a fantastic opportunity for students to get an insight of what it’s like to pursuing research-based opportunities like a PhD. I myself was part of such a project in the summer of 2017 where I worked in the Department of Physics. My project was to assess the use of thermal cameras to improve building planning and reducing electricity bills in UK households. We were fantastic team of physicists, chemical and software engineers who worked together for six weeks on this amazing project. We built various simulations and models to test our cameras and use those results to present a report, while I worked on building a website for the entire project for future research and surveying purposes (link given below).

A SURE project definitely enhances your CV and your skills to work in a team of people who put their individual skill sets on the table. It also improves your communication skills since you have to ensure that all work is divided among the team with a clear idea of the progress being made.  All projects carried out over the summer are then presented at the SURE showcase in the next year to give all new students an idea of what has been done previously. The showcase then presents awards to the best projects in various categories. I was quite honoured when my team received the award for the ‘Best Networking Project’, since it was one of the few teams who worked with students coming from different disciplines.

For me, personally, this was an amazing experience to explore an entirely new career opportunity, something which I hadn’t considered before. It gives you the confidence of making a sound decision when choosing a career path after graduation.  You get to evaluate whether you’d be more interested in research as an engineer or if you’d prefer working in a team on a more technical project. Unfortunately, for me as a Software Engineer, I’ll prefer sticking to coding projects in a team and telling my friends to restart their computers if they have a problem (trust me, it always works).


Now that you’re SURE about what SURE is, you SUREly would plan to apply to Sheffield to explore these excellent opportunities which SUREly develops your skills and enSUREs that you have a competitive edge in industry once you graduate, which you SUREly will. Who am I..?

Hi everyone! My name is Marta and I come from a city in Poland called Bydgoszcz (believe me or not but it’s not a random combination of letters but the actual name!). This is where I was born and spent my whole life until August 2015 when my Sheffield journey has begun. I am a huge optimist and life enthusiast that always looks for new opportunities to be one step closer in making my dreams come true. I have always been a person looking beyond the mediocrity and that is why I decided to challenge myself and start a new chapter of my life called “Aerospace Engineering at the University of Sheffield”.

Why University of Sheffield..?

That is a good question! So many countries over the world, so many different universities in United Kingdom but somehow I chose UoS. First of all, the engineering faculty here is one of the biggest in UK and it is a highly ranked university. Before applying I spent days browsing offers of numerous universities. As I did not have opportunity to come to England the internet was my only source of knowledge. Among of all, I found our university’s website very useful as it told me exactly what I wanted. What mostly got my interest in UoS was the structure of the course, the idea of spending a year in industry and engineering facilities that the university has in offer. When coming to Sheffield I didn’t know I would find there but honestly, the reality exceeded my expectations!

Why aerospace engineering..?

I’ve always been interested in science, especially physics, in particular I am inspired by the concepts of flying and defying gravity. I also enjoy practical approach to science and the idea of using it to make life easier. Taking it all together, aerospace engineering is a best choice for me as I can do something that I enjoy and at the same time I can make people’s lives better. I believe I will be able to do in my life what I really dream of which is investigating commercial aircraft crashes to reduce number of accidents and save innocent people by introducing new technologies and engineering solutions.

What is it like to study engineering at UoS..?

One word: AMAZING! As aerospace engineering is an interdisciplinary program, the structure of the course is created in such a way that we learn different branches of engineering simultaneously and the difficulty is adjusted gradually so we are able to follow everything. The most exciting part of my course is the fact that we spend a lot of time in laboratories conducting experiments so it is not only learning theoretical concepts but we have a chance to face practical problems or even construct devices such as Stirling engine or screwdriver! Moreover, we are working on many projects and the university’s aim is to increase our employability in the future.

And what about Sheffield itself..?

Literally, I love this city. I’ve never thought I would find a place, especially in a foreign country, where I would feel like at home (in first week already!). For me Sheffield is a perfect city as everything I need is located in the city centre where I can easily get on foot. Furthermore, the number of parks and green areas makes me feel very good.  Who in the morning on the way to their lectures wouldn't like to be welcomed by a squirrel passing by in the local park? Another important aspect of the “Steel City” is that it is very student friendly and if you don’t own a fortune, no worries! The costs of living here are among lowest in the UK.

To Sheffield, or not to Sheffield? That is the question. Some advice at the end!

To be honest choosing UoS to study is the best decision I have ever made. Yet a few months ago I didn’t expect my life to change that much and in such positive way! What I’d recommend to anyone is just take all your positive energy, enthusiasm and passion, choose the course you are interested in and be the engineer of your life! The University of Sheffield is a place that will certainly support you, and will give you amazing opportunities. You will also meet number of amazing friends from all over the world, you will have a chance to join any society or sport club that you want (I never thought I’d become a swing dancer before!) and make a step into your better future!

Meet our International Engineering Ambassador: Cheuk Ying Tam

Hi, I am Cheuk Ying Tam. I came from Hong Kong to Sheffield last September to start my academic life as a materials science and engineering student. My passion of collecting cookware is possibly the reason I am interested in the science behind materials in the first place. But this was not a readily available choice of subject in the universities in Hong Kong so I tried to apply for overseas universities. I was excited that I got a place here. Yet I was struggling back then. It was hard to choose to leave the city which I had been living in since the day I was born to a totally different place. Now, I am glad to say that I have made the right decision.

Maybe it is not that fair to compare Sheffield with Hong Kong (definitely one of the busiest city), but I still find this city makes me feel calm and relaxed. My new hobby is to walk around in Sheffield. This balances out the stress from school and the frustration of thinking of what to cook for dinner every day. Nevertheless, Sheffield is closely connected to a number important improvements in the history of material development, especially steel. Isn’t this great?

Speaking of my course, yes, I know this is confusing because of the name but it is really an engineering course rather than a science one. Except for the fact that I need to explain the background of my course whenever I meet new friends - this course has what I need to be a decent engineer. We have lessons with students from other engineering courses. I have plenty of chances to interact with students studying other professionals. And we have interesting labs almost every week. Most of our labs take place in the Diamond, which means that we can get our hands on those newest and advanced tools. The session I like most this year is the sand casting of aluminium. My hands were shaking when I was standing in a huge sand pit and pouring red hot molten aluminium in to a sand mould.

Despite of the wide variety of activities available in the university, I think the skills week and the global engineering challenge (GEC) week are the two that engineering students will never forget. They provide rare opportunities to widen our horizon and show that the university values our potential to be future engineers. During skills week I had the opportunity to visit a steel factory near the city and I was astonished by the scale of the industry. This has become a trigger that urges me to apply for a summer internship in related industry next year. In the GEC week, I had a chance to work with students from other faculties of engineering on a project about food storage technology and brushed up on my soft skills.


And for sure, there are also lots of non-academic related activities. I feel that I can achieve many things here. I am looking forward to the coming two years and maybe I will want to continue my fourth year of study by then.

The Art of Civil Engineering

We are creating the world!

A discipline with a rich history, a noble cause, of high intricacy and achieves revolutionary results, civil engineering perfectly envelopes of all these merits and still has so much more to offer to anyone bold enough to tread down this path. Trust me, I’m a future civil engineer.

As humans abandoned the nomadic lifestyle, there arose a need for humans to alter the environment to sustain ourselves and the communities we thrive in. Hence, we have expended the entirety of our existence in accumulating knowledge to shape nature according to our own will. As our knowledge base grew, we began to shape landscapes, erect structures and establish robust systems that safeguard our livelihoods and catalyse human development. Today, the legions of civil engineers throughout the world are tasked with this momentous duty. In becoming one, these engineers have armed themselves with vast arsenal of knowledge about the physical universe and are applying it to sculpt our flourishing civilisations.

From huts to skyscrapers, from dirt paths to highways, from wells to complex water systems, we as humans have utilised our ingenuity to find innovative means to challenge the limits of this volatile environment. The end results are spectacular…

Oh, the marvels that civil engineers have bestowed upon humanity!

The Burj Khalifa, a testament of modern civil engineering is the landmark megastructure of Dubai. Designed and constructed to an awe-inducing height of 829 metres, this modern day colossus overlooks the city and dominates its skyline. It is one of humanity’s bold attempts to breach the frontier of the sky that was once inaccessible to us, reclaiming it for the expansion of humankind.

They braved the depths of the sea!
Beneath the English Channel that had once divided England and Northern France, a rail tunnel was put into reality with the combined brilliance and effort of 13 000 engineers, technicians and workers. Spanning over 50 km and having a maximum depth of 75m below the sea bed, the rail tunnel connects the two nations. Through the Channel Tunnel, it is now possible for humans traverse over the sea on high speed passenger and shuttle trains.








These are only two of the seemingly countless engineering marvels around the world, and the number is increasing every day. Ideas and projects for taller buildings, efficient cities, and more robust systems to overcome harsher environments, all conceived for the greater good of human kind.

However, civil engineering has a more vital role in humanity, perhaps one that will put this discipline in a more noble light.

Dear reader, what if I were to tell you that these engineers may be the salvation of mankind?

A very bold assertion indeed. I found it to be a challenge to highlight this without sounding too clichĂ© or vague. Therefore, if you would allow me, I would like to share the message that lead me to this realisation, a message that had also sparked a passion within me to pursue this branch of engineering…

The message that changed my view of civil engineering came about in an early morning design lecture conducted by our lecturer, Mr. Paul Hulbert. He had prepared a case study about the construction of a skate park that he was personally involved in. Being a usual late-riser, I was anticipating the struggle to stay awake while he explained about how he came about the design for a skate park and the science behind it.  However, he had surprised me as he chose to focus on another critical aspect of the project: the stakeholders. In his lecture, Mr. Hulbert highlighted the effects of the simple construction project on the youths and residents in the area. He shared of how the youths voiced their desires for a skate park and enthusiastically raised funds for it, how the skate park provided a sanctuary for youthful entertainment and how he dealt with oppositions from local residents.

The message of the lecture was this: civil engineering goes far beyond the scientific knowledge and calculations needed to erect a structure, but instead it focuses on weaving into the fabric of society infrastructure that fulfils a need and brings improvements to the lives of all its members. When extrapolated to a global context, the messages highlight the significance of civil engineers in impacting humans around the globe. These engineers strive to bring safety and security to the international community by devising physical solutions that address issues such as resource shortage, global warming, pandemics and disasters.

In shielding populations from the forces of nature, civil engineers create infrastructure that serve to minimise damage to populations or prevent it altogether: surge barriers that protect lives and properties against flooding, seismic houses that ensure the safety of all its inhabitants in the event of devastating quakes, tsunami barriers that guard coastal cities and settlements from the ruthless force of towering waves, sewerage systems that stem the outbreaks of water-borne diseases such as cholera and typhoid.

In promoting the welfare of populations, civil engineers set into place infrastructure that ensure access of each individual to resources needed to develop themselves and the community around them: water and electrical systems that fuel productivity, gas distribution systems that provide warmth in a cold environment, roads and bridges that overcome geographical barriers to provide accessibility, structures that house educational institutions and medical services.

Countless examples of such infrastructures can be found on the Institution of Civil Engineer’s (ICE) website, but the inspirational work of one particular engineer deserves to be highlighted in this article. Chartered civil engineer, Josh Macabuag, had initially pursued civil engineering due to his interest in Mathematics and Science, in return was gifted with something much more fruitful than a satisfying career, the satisfaction of being a life-saver and being a beacon of hope to a family in Nepal. It has only been a semester into my undergraduate studies, but the University has on numerous occasions revealed to me the significance of engineering in the past and in contemporary times. With the years ahead that my talent will be nurtured by the University, I will be absorbing every last drop of valuable knowledge that this historical institution has to offer. I will do this in the prospects that one day, I will be able to apply my craft and propel humankind further into the frontiers of the environment, overcoming any physical obstacles that limits us. I will do this … because I’m a civil engineer.

What do you actually learn in Mechanical Engineering?

Well, to answer this question you need to go back and define engineering. It is the ‘application of scientific, economic, social, and practical knowledge in order to invent, design, build, maintain, and improve structures, machines, devices, systems, materials and processes’ (Wikipedia). Mechanical Engineering is the broadest type of engineering and focuses on the usage of heat and mechanical power for the design, production, and operation of machines and tools. 

 In my two years, I have developed a better understanding of how machines operate, why certain things are the way they are in terms of design and how the different type of engineering disciplines are interlinked to each other. In this blog I shall take you through some of the things we learn as part of our course and their applications in industry.

In my first year, we were taught the basic fundamentals- algebraic mathematics which is useful in solving problems, the magnitudes forces acting on a body and the implications of these forces, the microstructure of a substance and the relation to its properties (e.g what makes a material strong), thermodynamics (study of heat and temperature and their relation to energy and work), design skills which included drawing and understanding the importance of design and finally a touch of management (costing, managing a engineering project). These topics we learnt were quite detailed and supplemented by weekly lab sessions where we would put what we learnt to practice. For example, as a group we designed and carried out an experiment test a copper wire for its properties i.e. tensile strength and Young’s Modulus (its stiffness). After testing it and collecting the various data, calculations were done and we wrote a lab report explaining our findings and linking them to the theory we learnt in lectures. An application of this could be in the cables needed to operate a lift- the cables would need a material that has a high tensile strength to support the passengers. Engineers calculate how strong the cables have to be and reduce the likelihood of the cables snapping. Quite complex but interesting! 



  In the 2nd year, the structure was similar but the semester was much denser as a lot of content needed to be covered. We did a module about electric circuits which included electromagnetic induction, D.C and A.C circuits and network analysis. All machines are integrated with electric circuits so it is important to learn the concepts of circuits. 

We also used Solidworks in modelling a small wooden bridge we had to design to support a load. The software lets you simulate the bending that would occur when the load is placed and gives you an idea of where the bridge is at the weakest point. This is known as structural analysis and engineers use this to analyse structures like buildings, bridges and machines to see whether they are safe to use. 



Also, we used was MATLAB where we used mathematical equations to understand main concepts of vibration. Vibration analysis is really important to ensure the integrity of a machine- if it vibrates at certain frequencies it can be dangerous. A suspension of a car relies on dampers that reduce the vibration caused by the surface contact between the wheel and the uneven road. Engineers simplify the system into a model where they calculate the safe limit of vibration allowed. 

 Finally, the finance part of engineering is as important as the design itself. We learnt about the laws engineers and firms need to follow especially the laws of patents and environment. Managing a large engineering project is a key skill required. As groups we were given several imaginary projects that we had to manage in terms of ensuring costs don’t exceed, the solution provided was viable (good return of investment) and to ensure all employees are integrated into a team that would deliver the project on time. It was quite challenging task to manage all these factors but it was a good experience that will definitely help me in the future when assigned a project in a firm.

Meet our International Engineering Ambassadors: Vamesh Jajoo

Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I was born and brought up in Indore, India. It's a moderately-sized city not unlike Sheffield which is probably why I feel at home here. I did my IGCSEs and A Levels from The Emerald Heights International School, Indore and being at an international school and studying an international curriculum encouraged me to take a global perspective to things. My favourite subject at school was Mathematics with Physics and Chemistry really close second; this along with increasing interest in manufacturing persuaded me to study Mechanical Engineering.

Why did you choose the University of Sheffield?
I chose the University of Sheffield because it is one of the best places to study Mechanical Engineering (it is ranked 3rd in the UK according to the Times Good University Guide 2014 and ranked 69th overall by the QS World University Rankings) and it has an award winning students union. This ensured that I wouldn’t be compromised academically while also being able to get actively involved in student life giving me a well-rounded university experience.

What is the most enjoyable thing about studying your subject at the University of Sheffield?
The sheer excitement! You have to build a small self-powered car, produce a lab report, work on computer modelling assignments, complete the mathematics quiz online, coordinate with your group members - there's so much to do and it's all relevant and is helping you develop skills for you to solve an industry problem in the future! There are modules ranging from various engineering disciplines but also from project management and business practice which provide you with the skills to do well wherever you go after graduation.

How do you find the teaching and the study methods at the University of Sheffield?
There are three ways in which we are taught: lectures, tutorials and labs. I find the lectures engaging and interesting which is partly because of the brilliant lecturers who are experts in their own fields and partly because of the content which is so engrossing! Tutorials are sessions with a department professor who develops understanding on the course by stimulating discussions about the course material and guiding us through any problems that we might encounter. Labs are the spaces for practical work which complement what we have learnt in theory and this adds more to our learning of the topic. There are also workshops which is where we have machines for manufacturing. We just made a vice (a self-adjustable clamp) from scratch at the workshop!

What is your opinion on Sheffield as a city?
I find myself at home at Sheffield and this is something I was really worried about as an international student. It is one of the safest cities in the UK and the greenest in Europe! And the living costs are relatively cheaper than the rest of the UK which is a great advantage to have as a student! The people are also really friendly and helpful. One third of the city lies in the Peak District national park so it is quite hilly but if you don't fancy a walk the public transport is quite efficient.

What are the benefits of studying at the University of Sheffield?
Like I said before, the University of Sheffield offers me the best in academics and the best in student life. You have leading academics as your professors and well-equipped libraries and labs to assist you in studying. Then there's the career service for any help regarding placements or jobs and they are always ready to assist. There are quite a few places to go to if you need any help like the Student Advice Centre and the SSID (Student Support Information Desk). The Students Union organises events for like-minded people to meet up and there's also parties and bands to go to. It is a very well-rounded university experience.

Do you have any plans after the completion of your course?
I would like to work in the manufacturing industry to gain some industrial exposure and commercial awareness. If I then feel the need, I had return to academics and then pursue my dream of running my own business.

What advice would you give to prospective students coming to Sheffield?
I know you will miss home because I did but the best way to counter that is get busy! Work hard at your course, join societies and clubs, volunteer, get involved in the students union: there's loads of stuff to do! You will also meet like-minded people when you get involved and being with friends will also help you adapt to the new atmosphere. University life is a challenging time and it will push you out of your comfort zone but that's where the magic happens and you will find yourself stronger, more independent and a much more capable individual.

Meet our International Engineering Ambassadors: Yi Ci Tek

Course: MEng Civil and Structural Engineering

Nationality: Malaysian








Hey! Since this is my first post on this blog, allow me to introduce myself a little. My name is Tek Yi Chyn and everyone can call me Tekky. Yeah, I’m an Asian as you all may expect earlier from my name. What doesn’t meet your expectation is that I am actually from Malaysia, a multiracial country consisting of mainly Malays, Chinese and Indians. The large diversity of ethnics in Malaysia enables me to understand people from different background and cultures, which is why I am proud to be a Malaysian. Before arriving in the UK, I studied A-levels in my home country. Fortunately, my result was good enough to be accepted into the University of Sheffield.
Alright, let us get back to our main topic! I am currently studying Civil and Structural Engineering in University of Sheffield which ranked as one of the top in the course’s ranking. Unlike other universities, the University of Sheffield provides an optional placement year for students before completing the undergraduate course. This motivates me to work hard in my studies as well as being active in extra-curricular activities in order to get a placement.  Getting a placement is not easy, however as you paid the price, what you will get in return is priceless.  By having the work experience from a placement year, it is said to be easier to secure a good job after graduating.
As the majority of people may have an impression that Engineering is basically all about science,  I would say this is only partially correct. In Civil Engineering, we study Mathematics, Mechanics, Geotechnical Engineering and Materials Engineering. Other than that, what interests me the most is the design modules in civil engineering course.  During my first semester in first year, I learned how to draw structures using AutoCAD. Initially, it was really difficult, but as you practice more, it becomes much easier and that made me very proud of myself. XD Besides drawing, we got to design bridges in a group. We drew the plan on a paper, constructed the bridge with provided materials and designed a poster to advertise our bridge. The experience was totally worthy and FUN!
To be honest, University of Sheffield wasn’t my first choice. However, I am still grateful that I am able to study in one of the greenest and happiest city in United Kingdom. As University of Sheffield is a city campus, it is rather convenient for students to practice their daily routine, not only attending classes but also getting groceries for survival! The Moor Market, Sainsbury, Iceland and Poundland are just a stone throw away from my current accommodation. Besides that, the Mappin Building (main building for the Faculty of Engineering ) is located near the West Street. For your information, West Street is one of the busiest street in Sheffield because you basically can get everything from there. Everyone loves it!
It is indeed a great opportunity to be able to study in one of the top university and happiest city in UK. I have nothing to conclude but to ask, “Who doesn’t like Sheffield? “

Why choose UK

The UK is home to a wide array of multicultural individuals, all living together in a nutshell. This diversification leads to people from different communities interacting with one another to live in an environment of peace and harmony. Pakistanis, in particular, are welcomed with great warmth. There are Pakistani societies in many universities across UK, including the Pakistan Society at The University of Sheffield. This makes it particularly easy for Pakistani students to adjust with the new surroundings, away from home. This is one of the major reasons why students, in particular Pakistanis, tend to be more inclined towards the UK as a destination for pursuing higher studies, where they can experience multiculturalism as well as practice their religion in a liberal environment.

The UK is home to the most renowned universities of the world. Such rankings are testament of the fact that UK education standards have been consistently high and universities such as The University of Sheffield are seen as being one of the most prestigious universities in the world – both in terms of education as well as student satisfaction. UK, and in particular The University of Sheffield, is a world leader in terms of research and this success is reflected in the world rankings. All in all, this makes it an ideal place for Pakistani students to pursue higher education as they are exposed to ideas and discoveries in a very open and welcoming environment where they can express their thoughts freely.

The UK also offers a wide range of scholarships to international students. These scholarships are available at both the Undergraduate, as well as at the Postgraduate level. At the Undergraduate level, some of the highly prestigious scholarships being offered include the Pakistan Undergraduate Merit Scholarships at the University of Sheffield. These scholarships tend to be a source of great affinity for students on the lookout for saving some money off from the highly burdensome tuition and living fee all across universities in UK. Some of these scholarships directed towards Pakistani students serve as an incentive for many capable and deserving students to be able to afford world class education abroad at their dream universities. UK degrees at the Undergraduate level are also confined to a 3 year programme as opposed to a 4 year programme in other countries, having the benefit of being cost-effective and time efficient. UK degrees are internationally recognized and students have the advantage of being able to work anywhere in the world with a degree from a university in the UK.

The influx of Pakistanis to the UK for higher education is definitely due to an amalgamation of factors which together constitute the various reasons why Pakistanis choose to prefer UK over other countries.

Can you tell us a little about yourself?
Before studying at the University of Sheffield, I was enrolled at Nixor College for A Level Studies where I successfully scored 2A*’s, 1A and 1B in my A Level examinations. For my O Levels, I was enrolled at Foundation Public School, scoring 4A*’s and 5A’s.


Why did you choose the University of Sheffield to study your subject?
Currently holding the 3rd position in UK for Mechanical Engineering (according to The Guardian University Guide 2015), The University of Sheffield’s Engineering Department is widely reputed as being one of the best engineering department in the country. The programme also gives me an option of switching from my Bachelors programme (3 years) to a Masters programme (4 years) which would save up time and resources. Reputable companies such as Boeing, Rolls Royce and Siemens have their research centres located at University of Sheffield which enhances future job prospects.


What’s the most enjoyable thing about studying your subject at the University of Sheffield?
With such a reputable ranking for Mechanical Engineering, one does expect a lot from the university. However, it is safe to say that I was not let down in any way. In fact, my expectations surpassed. The most enjoyable thing in my opinion would be the fact that much of the learning is based on practicality rather than conceptuality. I have been used to a much more conceptual learning experience in my past, and the switch to a more practical based learning environment is very exciting!


What do you think of the teaching and study methods at the University of Sheffield?
The teaching and study methods employed at the University of Sheffield are designed around easing the study patterns for students. My Online Learning Environment, more commonly referred to as the ‘MOLE’, is the place to log in to for any lectures, notes or assignments that you may wish to go through. It is an actual lifesaver - For if you miss any lectures, this is the place to visit!


What do you see as the benefits of an education from the University of Sheffield?
The University of Sheffield is consistently ranked in the top 100 universities worldwide across various world rankings. One can therefore only expect an all rounded education experience. The University of Sheffield equips you with the necessary skills required to function effectively in the real world while providing the very best in academics.


What in your opinion is the best thing about student life at the University of Sheffield?
One of my biggest fears about moving so far away from home was the settling in factor. I was really nervous about whether I would be able to settle in well and make good friends. But now, a year later, I can vouch for the fact that settling in over here is definitely not an issue of concern. There is no discrimination here at all. I have found myself meeting such loving and caring individuals here, who make this place a home away from home for me.


What do you hope to achieve after you’ve finished your course?
My country has massive unused potential for growth in sectors that could utilise Mechanical Engineers. Pakistan's textile machinery, automobile, surgical instruments, oil and gas industries are a few of many examples of local industries that need our generation to step up as students of mechanics and engineering and stimulate micro and macro-economic development over the next half a century through investing their education in the growth of our industrial sector. The University of Sheffield will groom me towards implementing such efforts while engineering will help me think systematically and analytically, and provide me with insight into tools that will greatly aid my ability to indulge in problem solving for my country.


What advice would you give for prospective students coming to Sheffield?
For prospective students intending to come to Sheffield for higher education, don’t be too scared about feeling homesick. You will realise that there is always something to do over here. Be it meeting new people from different countries on the different societies you will join, to just exploring the city in general. You will find that this place has a lot to offer, as a new international student in Sheffield, I almost instantly felt at home. You should, however, be prepared to walk a lot over here as well as engage in more group work and individual learning. Gone are the days when teachers used to spoon-feed you all the literature – This is university, where you are supposed to do individual learning to comprehend all the lectures. However, this does not go to say that there are insufficient resources and help available at your hands; your personal tutors are there to guide you along the way. Prioritise your life and you will find yourself striking a balance between your academics and social life.

Meet our International Engineering Ambassadors: Min Qi Lee

Course: MEng Bioengineering (with a year in industry)

Before I begin, let me do a brief self-introduction.

My name is Min Qi Lee. I’m currently in Year 1, doing MEng Bioengineering with a year in industry. I come from South East Asia, Malaysia. (Above Singapore, in case you don’t know where Malaysia is) I’m a Malaysian Chinese just incase if you wonder why do I have a Chinese name.


Why Bioengineering?
After graduating from high school, I made my decision to do A-levels. During A-levels, I learnt biology, chemistry, physics and math. This made me realize which subjects I’m good or weak at. I like dealing with calculations in math and physics and at the same time, I still madly in love with biology! The combination of maths, physics and biology made me choose bioengineering! The simple words, bioengineering is where engineering meets biology/medicine.

Bioengineering simply means using biology principles and engineering skills to produce a better device or technology ranging from MRI to prosthetic arms to improve people’s daily lives.

Why Sheffield?
First of all, Sheffield is the 4th largest city in UK. It is also considered the safest city in UK. The first word that came out of my mind to describe Sheffield is greenery; this is why there are a lot of parks and gardens around. It is a good place for students to catch some fresh air after a hectic exam week or to relax and chill with some friends. The living expenses in Sheffield are also lower compared to other cities. This is an advantage for an international student like me.

Where do I have my classes?
Since I’m doing Bioengineering, most of my classes are in the engineering building, which is known as the Mappin Building (on the right). However, I also have some biology module, so some of my classes will be in Arts Tower and Alfred Denny Building.

Where is the best place in the University of Sheffield?
To Study:
The best place to study is in the Information Common (IC). It is open 24/7 everyday. There are 6 floors in total. Other than borrowing books, there are scanners, photocopier machines, printers available for the students’ convenience. There is also a prayer room for Muslims in the building.

What if you are hungry while studying? There are vending machines available everywhere. There is also a café in ground floor, which opens for 24 hours as well. They serve hot food, sandwiches, hot and cold beverages.

Good news for engineering students! In September 2015, ‘The Diamond’ will be completed and available for the students. It has a similar concept to the IC and it will be the new place for engineering students to study!

Some advice to all the juniors.
No matter what course you are planning to pursue, make sure you have done all the researches about it. Discuss with your seniors, parents or counsellors and make sure it is what you want. Lastly, enjoy your university life!

Meet our International Engineering Ambassadors: Izza Rosli

Hello! I am Izza Haziqah Rosli, currently a second year student taking Systems and Control Engineering here at University of Sheffield. Living almost the whole of my life in Brunei Darussalam, I was really excited when I was being offered to pursue my degree abroad. I have to admit that it was pretty scary at the thought of embarking on a new journey without any family around, however Sheffield has been really welcoming since the day that I arrived here.

Why did you choose UoS?
The best university that we should choose is one that is ranked higher globally in that specific course that we are interested in. In my opinion, ACSE department in University of Sheffield offers the best research quality and this will be really helpful in developing a student’s potential in exploring new inventions. And now, since I am in my second year and nearly starting my second semester soon, I haven’t regretted my decision even once!

Teaching and study methods at Sheffield
Most of the lectures here in Sheffield do require efforts from the students in order to achieve maximum understanding for that particular module. However, there is a lot of guidance around that should be helpful – either by asking help from the lecturer or by researching for more information from the university libraries. I should hereby mention that the library (known as Information Commons) is opened 24 hours daily, which is really amazing.

Your opinion on Sheffield as a city
Sheffield is a city that offers the best of both worlds, to be honest. Known as the greenest city around Europe, various landscapes that can be found are worth visiting. Despite the amazing scenery, the city also provides a variety of amusing entertainments, ranging from shopping at Meadowhall to visiting parks. Moreover, it is a great place for students since living expenses are much lower compared to other cities and public transportation is easily available the moment you arrive in Sheffield!      

Advice to a prospective student before coming to Sheffield   
One of the things that students should always remind themselves is the purpose of them coming here. This kind of reminder is really important in making sure any kind of distractions won’t affect our studies. Time management and a good balance between study and play ensures a good student lifestyle.

Meet our International Engineering Ambassadors: Sebina Kalawadwala

Hi, first of all I’ll start by telling you a bit about myself. I am Sebina Kalawadwala, a first year Civil Engineering student from Gujarat, India. I have completed my 12th CBSE boards from Lancers Army School, Surat. I am passionate about sports, especially table tennis. A good stress reliever for me is listening to music or curling up in bed with a good book.

Now going to the most essential question, why I chose to study at the University of Sheffield and a more pressing one, what made me come here, hundreds of miles away from my home and family? Well to be honest the decision was not easy but I can tell you this, it is definitely worth it. I chose this University because I was looking for a very specific kind of course, i.e. MEng Civil and Structural Engineering, which is a 4 year integrated masters course. Not a lot of people know this but in the UK, as of now, there are only a handful of universities offering this course of which the University of Sheffield is the best. The University has a lot to offer in addition to their study programs, the Students’ Union has been voted, 4 times in a row, the best Students’ Union in the country. We have more than 300 societies and sports clubs - there is something for everyone here and if there isn't then they can start their own society.

What I love about my department?
The thing I love most is that here at the University it’s not all about theory; we are provided with real life hands-on practical experience. How? Let me give you an example. Through the study of Civil Engineering, everyone knows that one will go ahead in life to design and build bridges and other structures after gaining a deep understanding of the principles behind it, but would you expect a first year student to do the same? The answer will most definitely be no. Going ahead of the conventional thinking, we were asked to build a model bridge purely from our intuitions and qualitative judgment, excluding any sort of technical or mathematical calculation. Here we were given a brief which we had to strictly adhere to and, like a real life situation, we bought and sold materials, hence calculating the total cost of the bridge. Later we tested the bridge and, to avoid any penalties, we ensured that the latter was able to carry the required minimum load of 8kg.

Going through this exercise I am sure that I learnt a lot more than I ever could from any textbooks.  I am confident this exercise was just the tip of the iceberg - the department has a lot more to offer in the future. I am eagerly looking forward to my time here.

In my profile I could have gone on talking about numbers but personally I feel numbers are boring and you can never get a true sense of something from them, so instead I decided to write about one of my most cherished experiences and I hope it will give a feel of how studying at the University of Sheffield is.
