Interview with a student currently doing internship at Magnomatics in Sheffield

1.Tell me a bit about yourself.
My name is Ioan-Iulian Vizireanu and I am originally from Romania. I am pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering with a year in industry and currently I am doing my internship in the 3rd year at Magnomatics in Sheffield

2. During the course of your degree did you undertake any other placements in research or industry? If yes, how was the experience?
Since I started my studies at The University of Sheffield, I have been employed by NuScale Power in U.S. There I was assigned to validate the theoretical results obtained by the mechanical team for the heat gain/loss in the cooling pool vessel. I truly enjoyed using ANSYS Fluent and CFX to model and analyse the temperature profile through the reactor. Following the summer internship, I have been employed by Magnomatics to use my skills in SolidWorks, MATLAB and ANSYS Mechanical to simulate deformation and vibrational effects in different structures. As an example, I am currently working on a simulation which measures the total deformation in a wind turbine model.

3. What does your role at Magnomatics entail?
My role is predominantly a starting point for the company’s future projects, therefore, most of my work represents revolves around concepts. I have to start analysing the concepts in order to generate data that will be further processed by the mechanical team.


4. Tell me a bit about the process of acquiring this role? Did you undergo assessment centres? How did you tackle them?
Initially, I heard about Magnomatics at one of the career fairs at The University of Sheffield. I then submitted my CV and underwent a psychometric test. The last part of the process was attending a face-to-face interview with 2 members of the mechanical team. They wanted to know about my interests in the field and what expectations I had from the internship.    

5. What advice would you give to prospective students or students who are currently looking for placements and year in Industry?
The only advice I can offer is to be honest with yourself and your employer. In my opinion, when a company is looking for an intern, they are not looking for a qualified engineer who might have worked in that industry for at least 2 years. Rather, they would like to see a smart student, who is always ready to learn and willing to improve his practical skills. Therefore, if you are interested in their specific industry, you will definitely be able to show it.


6. What is a typical day in your role like? What is the best and worst part about your job?
Usually, my day starts by looking at results gathered from a simulation I run on the previous night. I then analyse the data and compare it with theoretical values. Also, I meet with the other mechanical engineers responsible for that project and we discuss together if the simulation shows a realistic behaviour for our project. If we believe that we need more refinement in some critical points, then I have to re-mesh the model and start another simulation to run over the night.
In my opinion, there are not bad parts in what I am doing. During my interview I was asked what I would like to work on and I was allocated with my choice - ANSYS.
If I would have to choose the best part of my internship, it would be the fact that I am working on projects from different industries, such as: energy, automotive, aerospace; which offered me the chance to develop my theoretical skills in these domains. 


7. What is something exciting that you are currently working on?
Currently I am working with a company which manufactures wind turbine generators. My mission is to model a new concept in SolidWorks which uses our magnetic bearing system instead of the conventional ones. By doing so, the space required by the turbine generator would be massively reduced but at the same time I have to make sure that all the parts fit together in a proper manner.

Meet our IEA Alumni - Rasan Chandra

Rasan Chandra, from Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, studied Mechanical Engineering at the University of Sheffield and graduated with First Class Honours. He chose the Year in Industry option, which gave him the opportunity to spend a year working in an organisation to improve his skills and employability.
Rasan is now a graduate trainee at British Sugar, the sole British producer of sugar from sugar beet, and works in their Bury St Edmunds Factory. Here he talks about life after graduation and how university prepared him for his future..  
What does your job at British Sugar involve?
My role as a graduate is to gain an in-depth understanding of the sugar manufacturing process through structured learning modules. Additionally, I will gain practical experience by working with every individual on my shift team, who have the skills and knowledge of various parts of the process to ensure the factory runs efficiently.
On a day-to-day basis, I am actively involved with the on-site shift team to ensure a steady factory operation. This includes walking the factory floor to do checks, troubleshooting and assisting the process operator. I also participate in management meetings where current issues are discussed and targets are set.
What do you enjoy about your job?
I enjoy the practical aspects of the job and applying theory into the real-world. Everyone I have met at the factory is very friendly and they display enthusiasm when answering any of my queries, which encourages learning and makes it an enjoyable working environment.
What are the challenging aspects of the job?
As Graduates, we are required to learn all aspects of the factory and sugar manufacturing within our first year of the scheme. A lot of it is self-driven and we are responsible for determining who to meet and which meetings to get involved with, which requires strong people and time management skills. This makes the scheme challenging but I find this encouraging as it compels me to work hard for what I want to achieve.
What skills does the work require?
Strong technical understanding, people management, time management, ability to think on your feet, problem solving.
Why would you recommend Engineering and the University of Sheffield?
The University of Sheffield has helped me shape me into who I am today both professionally and personally. I have taken many opportunities that have come my way and received guidance from the University’s professionals and academics.
Engineering as a subject is something I am passionate about and Sheffield is one of the top universities in the UK to do it in. The University organises activities such as Global Engineering Challenge and Engineering You’re Hired, which give students an opportunity to work with different engineering disciplines to solve real world problems. What did you enjoy during your time at Sheffield?
Besides being involved in an immersive engineering degree, I participated in many extracurricular activities, and was ultimately recognised with a Sheffield Graduate Award. I joined societies and occupied my time well with social events and there was never a time where I felt left out because being at Sheffield was like being part of a big family.  
What do you want to do in the future?
I want to be more involved with Engineering projects and eventually take up a managerial role in the future.
What would your advice to new students be?
My advice is to be proactive from day one. You have already taken the big step of joining the University and stepping out of your comfort zone. Get more involved with societies, extracurricular activities and explore your different interests; there is no limit to what you can do at University.

About me:
I'm a second year mechanical engineering student here at University Of Sheffield who is passionate about designing and inventing things that'll have a great impact on people's lives.
What was your favourite subject at school?
Maths, Physics and Computers.
How did you decide which degree course to take?
I always liked making and designing new things. Mechanical Engineering was one fo the courses that would teach me how to do this and learning the theories behind it. The special thing about this course is that I will get to see my designs turn into real machines/objects.  It also has a great job market too if you want to find a job after graduating.
Who inspired you to follow this route?
My Sister. She graduated from University Of Sheffield 5 years ago in exactly the same degree I'm currently studying and found a job before graduating. She's now working for a rail company called Interfleet Ltd and during Olympics designed a new safety system for London Underground Victoria lines in London.
What advice would you give to people about to choose a university course?
I'd suggest taking some time researching the potential courses you're interested in. Maybe talk with students who are already taking those courses and ask them about their modules.
Most of all select a course you would enjoy doing since you will do great at anything you enjoy doing in a long-term. Also, research the university and city as well. Many prospective students choose University based on the course rankings but don't take into consideration the city and its student life.
Why did you choose Sheffield?
The faculty of Engineering at University of Sheffield has been always one of the top 3 in the UK. Also, the degree is accredited by IMechE (Institue of Mechanical Engineers) which is a well known organisation among employers(Even Some of them require this). The course also provides a great amount of practical side which I found really fun and informative.For Example: Labs, Engineering Global Challenge,Applications week and "Engineering: You're hired" course.
The University also has the best students union in the country. 
Apart from University , The city is one of the best students cities in the UK in terms of being cheap, safe and green.

What is Engineering Global Challenge? or Applications Week?
During your course as an engineering student you will need to complete some short modules/course in order to advance to the next year. These are compulsory but great fun and really helpful and I really enjoyed them myself.
  • Engineering Global Challenge: In this week-long project, all first year students in the Engineering Faculty tackle real-world problems from a global perspective. I with a team of other engineering students worked on a solution to Water and Sanitary problems of a small village called Devikalum in India. Every year there will be a new project but with the same global view.
  • Applications Week: During my first year, I completed this one week course where I had to make a Vice in a workshop from Engineering Drawings. Then, Redesign it in Solidworks and workout the financial viability of its processing. One of my best experiences in the first year.
  • Engineering "You're Hired": This is the continue of Engineering Global Challenge. I will do this one week course this year where real employers from industry will give students a project on the week. I and my engineering team will then have one week to come up with a new idea or solution for the project.
Your course has a foundation year. How was your foundation year and why did you take it?
I had not completed my Pre-university year before coming to Sheffield so I had to complete a foundation year before starting my degree. It's the same as Pre-University year but with the benefits of studying the modules that is going to help me in my current degree (Maths, Physics, Chemistry) and having access to all the facilities students have (Information Commons, Libraries, Gym, etc).
What are some of your best Achievements at University of Sheffield?
  • I was part of the winning team at Sheffield Start-up Weekend organised by University of Sheffield Enterprise(USE). We made a Hands-free cookbook app under 54 hours that interacts with users without their dirty hands (During Cooking) touching the phone screen. We then went to London to compete on national scale and our invention became 2nd in the UK.   • I also have a published game on Windows 8 store which I made under 48 hours with a group of students when I participated in Microsoft Game Jam last summer.
What other activities do you do apart from your course?

What do you like to do when you are not working on your degree?
I like designing and this doesn't limit me to my degree. I'm currently working with softwares such as Adobe Illustrator, helping Connections team of Sheffield Volunteering with their logo and leaflets as a Volunteering Ambassador.




Apart from these, I'm studying Game Design on my free time and learning programming languages such as JavaScript and HTML5.
What are your plans for the future/dreams/goals?
After finishing my second year, I'm planning to take one year industrial placement by the help of University. As in the future, I'm seeking a career as a Design Engineer and in 5 years time after graduating becoming a project manager of one of the Engineering Companies in the UK.
Last Comments:
I'm certain that I did not choose the wrong university to study in. I love both the city and University and its community here and there are lots of activities to do during the year with 250 societies and the best Students Union. My department has also greatly supported me during my studies.

Meet our International Engineering Ambassador: Leticia Campello

Background
I am Leticia Campello, first year student of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Sheffield. I am from Recife, a city in the northeast of Brazil. I have always dreamt about studying overseas and fortunately, I had the opportunity to move to Sheffield. This was the biggest decision in my life so far, as I was already studying mechanical engineering in a university in my city and I decided to “start all over again” coming to University of Sheffield. To be honest, it was scary to leave my city where I had never been more than a couple of months away, to study in a different country on the other side of the ocean. However, I felt like I was at home since the day I arrived here.

Why Engineering?
I did not know I wanted to study engineering until high school.  I do not really know what made me have this change of heart but I still remember how I felt during my maths and physics classes: excited and mind-blown. I did some research about engineering, especially mechanical engineering, and I decided this was what I wanted to do for life.

Why UoS?
I had in mind that I wanted to study in the UK but was not sure which university. I spent a couple of months doing some research about universities’ ranking and I found out that The University of Sheffield was one of the best in mechanical engineering. When I did my further research about UoS, I found out it has everything that I always wanted at a university and, I do not want to be cheesy, but I literally fell in love with the university.

Teaching and study methods at Sheffield
When I first got here, it was a shock - a good one - for me to see how different everything was from my university in Brazil. The thing I like the most at UoS is that you have a lot of support from your tutors and mentors, they are there for you to help you with anything you might need. The other aspect about UoS is how every modules are linked to each other and how important real life problems are to the modules, how the lecturers always bring real life example so that we can understand clearly about what the module is about.

Veni Vidi Vici - GEC 2016 Edition

Organised by Engineers Without Borders (EWB) and The University of Makerere, Global Engineering Challenge is a week where marvellous ideas are produced and unforgettable memories are made. Recreating a 9-5 work place environment, the students are tasked to work on an engineering project in interdisciplinary groups. The entire Faculty of Engineering is divided into multiple hubs and each hub housed 7-8 groups, administered by a facilitator. The most unique thing is that none of the hubs has more than one group working on a single type of project and this maintains the individuality and innovativeness.

This year the main focus area was the region around Bambui in Cameroon. Project topics ranged from Water Supply to Transport to Hygiene. All of these categories were suggested by academics from University of Makerere in Uganda and were based on real life issues. Having given you all an idea of what GEC was, let me take a more personal perspective on the competition.

I’m a Mechanical Engineering student and in my group I had students from the Department of Material Science Engineering and Aerospace Engineering. When these 3 disciplines work in a team, projects usually involve construction of buildings or automobiles or something similar. Our project was to devise an Anti-Poaching system for the African forest elephants in the Bamenda-Banso highlands in Cameroon. We had to have a cheap and robust solution and individual tagging of animals was discouraged. Having never met each other, the first day was spent on either arguing or sitting in silence. But, gradually we grew accustomed to each other, realised our strengths and weaknesses and started working on the project. The whole week was similar to a healthy symbiotic relationship where I got the opportunity to teach my teammates something new and vice-versa. The final solution that we came up with involve the usage of solar-powered drones to monitor the forest.

Everything related to drones usually involves computer programming and we had no Computer Science students in our teams. What did we do? We researched and learned the way to program drones through Arduino circuits, determined the angles at which they’d have to fly and even the view of their lenses. Even though we had no prior experience of the essential skill, we designated parts of the job according to individual strengths and then shared the knowledge amongst each other. Eventually, we were able to incorporate the idea in our project and completed it in time. I believe this was the prime motive of GEC, i.e. to find out the solution through teamwork and using each other’s strengths to succeed.

The week had 3 major milestones:


1)     Completing the project
It took a lot of effort. We had many failures and there were times when we had to start over again but we persevered and never lost heart. Finally, at the end of the week we came up with a design that we were proud of. Throughout the project, we learnt from each other’s mistakes and supported one another to every extent. It was my first project working in an interdisciplinary team and it shall be etched in my memory forever.

2)     Interaction on Alumni Day


We had the privilege of having Mr. Barry Tan as our guest speaker on the Alumni Day. Being a recent Alumni and having worked in prestigious companies like SNC-lavalin, Mr. Tan shared amazing experiences and also gave some profound advice. Talking about his past mistakes and experiences, he suggested students to get involved in co-curricular activities, participate in competitions and do as many internships as possible. His best statement of the day - ‘Don’t do a Barry’

3)     Winning the competition



All the hard work and effort was finally rewarded when we were awarded the ‘best communicated solution’ for our project. It was a great experience and I’m glad GEC provided me with this opportunity.


Finally, all I’d say is that GEC was a mixed experience for everyone. Some people were lucky to have hardworking and passionate people in their group while others were not so lucky. I believe this was a reflection of how life usually is. Not everything is always according to our choices but as long we persevere, everything eventually falls in the right direction.

Meet our International Engineering Ambassador: Akshit Sood


Name: Akshit Sood

Can you tell us about you?
I was born and brought up in Delhi, India. I have lived all my life in Delhi before coming to Sheffield. I did my higher education from Ryan international school. I have always been interested in mathematics and represented my school at numerous mathematics Olympiads. My love for machines and design persuaded me to choose mechanical engineering.

Why did you choose University of Sheffield?
I chose University of Sheffield as it is one of the best places to study Mechanical Engineering and holds third position in the UK for mechanical engineering (according to the Guardian Guide 2015). The engineering department of the university is well reputed and known throughout the country for its excellence in education. Moreover, with companies like Boeing, Rolls Royce working closely with the engineering department, studying at the university enhances my future job prospects.

What is the most enjoyable thing studying your subject at the University of Sheffield?
The most exciting part of studying at the University of Sheffield is to see the application of different concepts learned in lectures into real life problems. Numerous labs and practical sessions ensure that we have the true knowledge of everything that is being taught to us. The new diamond building has provided us with top-level equipment which has given us the chance to familiarise and understand the use of the high tech equipment in the industry. 

What’s your opinion on Sheffield as a city?
My first impression of Sheffield was that it is a beautiful city with friendly people. My experience as an international student was such a mesmerizing one that I never felt that I was away from home. I was amazed to see the variety of people from different countries of different backgrounds, working together united in this city. From the nature’s gift of Peak district to the modern city center this city has lots to offer for an international student like me. 

Hobbies:
I always had great interest in cricket and badminton and I love playing them in my free time. Since living in Sheffield has given me a new hobby of cooking, I love trying new recipes and new cuisines. Apart from these I enjoy volunteering for the local organizations in Sheffield. I am a member of fundraising group for the British heart foundation where I help in organizing various fundraising events throughout the year.

What are your plans for future/dreams/goals?

My aim for the next year is to get a placement year in the oil and gas sector. After graduation, I plan to work in the oil and gas industry to gain industrial exposure and commercial awareness.

A bit about myself…

My name is Birju Galaiya and I am currently studying in my 2nd year of a four year Mechanical Engineering course which includes my masters. I am an international student from Kenya. Being in a foreign country is overwhelming at the start but as time flew by I can now say that I am enjoying the student life in Sheffield!


Why Engineering?


My favourite subject in school was mathematics while physics was not far behind. Having a greater understanding of science based subjects in both my junior and senior school; I always preferred something that challenges me. I have been proved right- Mechanical Engineering is not a walk in a park but rather a stimulating course requiring one to think outside the box. I thrive in such situations and I am relishing both the mathematics and physical concepts the course has to offer.

Also, my particular course involves a management aspect of engineering which gives me a great insight on commercial awareness while taking into account the cost and operations implications of engineering projects. The skills I have make me employable in any sector of the economy and not just the engineering and manufacturing sector.


What made me choose University of Sheffield?

Having the options of choosing five universities through the UCAS application process, it was really confusing to decide which university I should pick. I picked The University of Sheffield due to 3 main reasons. Firstly, the University’s engineering department was ranked highly thus I was assured about the quality of education I would receive. The university has several scholarships which would help alleviate the financial burden. A scholarship of £6500 annually (now £7000) was being awarded to one student from Kenya. Unfortunately I did not receive it, but my fellow friend did. I also receive a £2000 engineering scholarship (as do all engineering international students) annually.


Wanting both a vibrant city life and a relaxed countryside life, Sheffield seemed to be a great choice (still is!) as it has a stunning city centre while the Peak District is just next door. Sheffield is the greenest city in the UK. Yes that is a fact.


Career Prospects

Being in my second year, the thought of working as a qualified engineer strikes you- Am I going to get a job once I graduate?


Although I am expected to finish University in 2016, the process of getting a job starts now. Seems early but you do not realise how quickly time goes. I intend to perhaps take a gap year in which I would work in an engineering firm before coming back for my masters. The application processes can be frustrating and long but the university has a dedicated careers service department who give you advice, tips and also review your applications. They also organise job fairs where you can talk to employers and see what opportunities are available.


When I am not studying or doing experiments…
The University of Sheffield’s Student Union has so much to offer. With over 300 diverse societies to join the Student’s Union building is always buzzing with people and activities. No wonder it has been rated the Students' Union in the UK since 2009! I tend to hang out at the union with fellow colleagues during breaks between lectures because the atmosphere is lively especially now it has expanded.

If you think engineering is going to gobble up all your time, well, you are wrong. There is plenty of time to meet new people, do new things and most importantly have fun! Some of the things I enjoy doing include:


· Running around Sheffield as a way to keep fit and refresh myself. The best part of it is running up the countless number of hills!


· At the moment I am part of the National Hindu Student’s Forum Sheffield which is a faith society. Being sports secretary, I organise football and badminton sessions for our members but I also help out in organising events such as society socials. It keeps me busy but nonetheless rewarding.


· Learning new skills through the ‘Give it a go’ scheme. Some skills I have gained include self-defence, iMovie video editing and first aid. I also learnt the basics of GoalBall (Paralympic sport).


· Volunteering and participating in events around Sheffield; from painting a house (messy!) to running the Sheffield Half Marathon raising funds for charity.



Nightlife and the City Centre

Let’s admit it- we all want a great social life! Sheffield has several clubs catering for different tastes in music and if that’s not tempting enough you can have your own house party! The Motorpoint arena hosts big concerts (Justin Timberlake in March) as well. For sport fanatics, like me, visiting Sheffield United’s stadium is a must. As an international student, watching an ice hockey game was thrilling as it was something new. The city centre itself is a shopper’s heaven with Christmas markets and Halloween themed nights lighting up the city.

My Summer Placement Experience

After finishing through with the first year of university, I was looking to find a summer placement back home in Pakistan. Fortunately enough, I managed to secure a placement at Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), Pakistan’s national flag carrier. This was a two month long summer placement, from June till September. In the scorching summer temperatures of around 40°C, I started off my placement in the month of Ramadhan, a period of fasting from dawn till dusk for Muslims. As imagined, the field work pertaining to the placement really took the energy out of me during such high temperatures while observing fasts. 






The placement involved students being divided into groups and being rotated around Base Maintenance, Line Maintenance and the Engine Overhaul Shop. Seeing an aircraft with such highly precisioned engines in front of your eyes was a sight I cannot describe into words. While working at Base Maintenance, I was able to witness aircraft undergoing checks based on the class of check the aircraft was due to undergo depending on cycles and flight hours, namely the A, B, C, and D check. I also had a chance to work in Line Maintenance, witnessing how aircraft are serviced on ground before being sent off for flights. I have also worked extensively in the engine shop, where engines used to come in for shop visits and go through the rigorous process of being checked for snags before being sent off for service. After cleaning and NDT inspection, any components found that required machining or repair were sent off to the Machine shop where processes such as lathing, boring, and drilling were done to make the component serviceable again. This allowed me to witness Computerised Numerical Control (CNC) machines, including the CNC Vertical Turret Lathe and the CNC horizontal boring machine. After repair and modification, parts were sent to the general assembly area to be put together. The engines were then sent to the test bench for final clearance after verifying errors.



After having rotated around the aforementioned areas, we were also sought to assist ground engineers in helping repair any sort of snags that would come up. This gave us a hands-on approach and helped put our knowledge to use. PIA also services aircraft and engines for the other privately owned airlines in Pakistan, and therefore I also had a chance to go and help out engineers working on an Air Indus aircraft. Since the shops were located very close to the runway of the Karachi Airport, seeing aircraft taking off and landing in front of a matter of a few meters distance was simply breathtaking!


This placement provided me with the chance to put thermodynamics and fluid mechanics theories to practicality while learning about different aspects of aerodynamics, fluid hydraulics, and pneumatics. Apart from the obvious networking and teamwork skills, this unique experience provided me with an opportunity to learn extensively about the theory of flight and a basic gas turbine engine. This experience allowed my confidence to flourish while working in a team of interns in a very competitive environment.

What do you actually learn in Mechanical Engineering?

Well, to answer this question you need to go back and define engineering. It is the ‘application of scientific, economic, social, and practical knowledge in order to invent, design, build, maintain, and improve structures, machines, devices, systems, materials and processes’ (Wikipedia). Mechanical Engineering is the broadest type of engineering and focuses on the usage of heat and mechanical power for the design, production, and operation of machines and tools. 

 In my two years, I have developed a better understanding of how machines operate, why certain things are the way they are in terms of design and how the different type of engineering disciplines are interlinked to each other. In this blog I shall take you through some of the things we learn as part of our course and their applications in industry.

In my first year, we were taught the basic fundamentals- algebraic mathematics which is useful in solving problems, the magnitudes forces acting on a body and the implications of these forces, the microstructure of a substance and the relation to its properties (e.g what makes a material strong), thermodynamics (study of heat and temperature and their relation to energy and work), design skills which included drawing and understanding the importance of design and finally a touch of management (costing, managing a engineering project). These topics we learnt were quite detailed and supplemented by weekly lab sessions where we would put what we learnt to practice. For example, as a group we designed and carried out an experiment test a copper wire for its properties i.e. tensile strength and Young’s Modulus (its stiffness). After testing it and collecting the various data, calculations were done and we wrote a lab report explaining our findings and linking them to the theory we learnt in lectures. An application of this could be in the cables needed to operate a lift- the cables would need a material that has a high tensile strength to support the passengers. Engineers calculate how strong the cables have to be and reduce the likelihood of the cables snapping. Quite complex but interesting! 



  In the 2nd year, the structure was similar but the semester was much denser as a lot of content needed to be covered. We did a module about electric circuits which included electromagnetic induction, D.C and A.C circuits and network analysis. All machines are integrated with electric circuits so it is important to learn the concepts of circuits. 

We also used Solidworks in modelling a small wooden bridge we had to design to support a load. The software lets you simulate the bending that would occur when the load is placed and gives you an idea of where the bridge is at the weakest point. This is known as structural analysis and engineers use this to analyse structures like buildings, bridges and machines to see whether they are safe to use. 



Also, we used was MATLAB where we used mathematical equations to understand main concepts of vibration. Vibration analysis is really important to ensure the integrity of a machine- if it vibrates at certain frequencies it can be dangerous. A suspension of a car relies on dampers that reduce the vibration caused by the surface contact between the wheel and the uneven road. Engineers simplify the system into a model where they calculate the safe limit of vibration allowed. 

 Finally, the finance part of engineering is as important as the design itself. We learnt about the laws engineers and firms need to follow especially the laws of patents and environment. Managing a large engineering project is a key skill required. As groups we were given several imaginary projects that we had to manage in terms of ensuring costs don’t exceed, the solution provided was viable (good return of investment) and to ensure all employees are integrated into a team that would deliver the project on time. It was quite challenging task to manage all these factors but it was a good experience that will definitely help me in the future when assigned a project in a firm.

Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I was born and brought up in Indore, India. It's a moderately-sized city not unlike Sheffield which is probably why I feel at home here. I did my IGCSEs and A Levels from The Emerald Heights International School, Indore and being at an international school and studying an international curriculum encouraged me to take a global perspective to things. My favourite subject at school was Mathematics with Physics and Chemistry really close second; this along with increasing interest in manufacturing persuaded me to study Mechanical Engineering.

Why did you choose the University of Sheffield?
I chose the University of Sheffield because it is one of the best places to study Mechanical Engineering (it is ranked 3rd in the UK according to the Times Good University Guide 2014 and ranked 69th overall by the QS World University Rankings) and it has an award winning students union. This ensured that I wouldn’t be compromised academically while also being able to get actively involved in student life giving me a well-rounded university experience.

What is the most enjoyable thing about studying your subject at the University of Sheffield?
The sheer excitement! You have to build a small self-powered car, produce a lab report, work on computer modelling assignments, complete the mathematics quiz online, coordinate with your group members - there's so much to do and it's all relevant and is helping you develop skills for you to solve an industry problem in the future! There are modules ranging from various engineering disciplines but also from project management and business practice which provide you with the skills to do well wherever you go after graduation.

How do you find the teaching and the study methods at the University of Sheffield?
There are three ways in which we are taught: lectures, tutorials and labs. I find the lectures engaging and interesting which is partly because of the brilliant lecturers who are experts in their own fields and partly because of the content which is so engrossing! Tutorials are sessions with a department professor who develops understanding on the course by stimulating discussions about the course material and guiding us through any problems that we might encounter. Labs are the spaces for practical work which complement what we have learnt in theory and this adds more to our learning of the topic. There are also workshops which is where we have machines for manufacturing. We just made a vice (a self-adjustable clamp) from scratch at the workshop!

What is your opinion on Sheffield as a city?
I find myself at home at Sheffield and this is something I was really worried about as an international student. It is one of the safest cities in the UK and the greenest in Europe! And the living costs are relatively cheaper than the rest of the UK which is a great advantage to have as a student! The people are also really friendly and helpful. One third of the city lies in the Peak District national park so it is quite hilly but if you don't fancy a walk the public transport is quite efficient.

What are the benefits of studying at the University of Sheffield?
Like I said before, the University of Sheffield offers me the best in academics and the best in student life. You have leading academics as your professors and well-equipped libraries and labs to assist you in studying. Then there's the career service for any help regarding placements or jobs and they are always ready to assist. There are quite a few places to go to if you need any help like the Student Advice Centre and the SSID (Student Support Information Desk). The Students Union organises events for like-minded people to meet up and there's also parties and bands to go to. It is a very well-rounded university experience.

Do you have any plans after the completion of your course?
I would like to work in the manufacturing industry to gain some industrial exposure and commercial awareness. If I then feel the need, I had return to academics and then pursue my dream of running my own business.

What advice would you give to prospective students coming to Sheffield?
I know you will miss home because I did but the best way to counter that is get busy! Work hard at your course, join societies and clubs, volunteer, get involved in the students union: there's loads of stuff to do! You will also meet like-minded people when you get involved and being with friends will also help you adapt to the new atmosphere. University life is a challenging time and it will push you out of your comfort zone but that's where the magic happens and you will find yourself stronger, more independent and a much more capable individual.

Meet our International Engineering Ambassadors: Eldar Rahimov

About me:
My name is Eldar Rahimov and before I came to the University of Sheffield to study MEng Mechanical Engineering with Nuclear Technology. I was studying in International Baccalaureate school in Azerbaijan. Although I have never studied abroad, I was studying in English for 2 years, so it was not that difficult to adapt here.

What was your favourite subject at school?
Physics. I always liked to learn the theory behind different processes and how things work. I was also good at maths at school so I wanted to study something that combines these subjects.

Why Mechanical engineering?
At school my favourite parts of physics were mechanics, thermodynamics and nuclear science and this course covers all of them. It also requires good knowledge of maths and covers Computer Aided Design and Matlab which are really useful in your future engineering career.

Why University of Sheffield?
The University of Sheffield is one of top universities in Mechanical engineering in UK, so I applied for it. My main choice was between Universities of Sheffield and Bristol. The main reason I chose the University of Sheffield is because I received a very warm welcome from staff and they helped me with all the queries I had.

Application process:
The application process through UCAS was very confusing at the beginning, so my advice is to do some research about applications and the steps before getting your unconditional offer. I felt quite stressed that I did something wrong before I got first offer. I received the offer from University of Sheffield 3 weeks after application date (applied 13th of January).

Studying here:
I’m currently in my first year of study and enjoy the course very much. The first year is not very difficult as it mainly covers material you probably already did at school, but at a higher level. As a mechanical engineer you have tutorial sessions twice a week with your personal tutor with a group of 3-4 people. It is very helpful in terms of understanding the materials you didn’t understand during the lecture. Along with theoretical modules, I had Design and Manufacturing where you had to design, test and build a final model with your teammates.

Free time:
During the first year you quite a lot of free time and the Students Union (rated number 1 in the UK) offers a great choice of societies (different sports, music, art and etc). You also have a lot of opportunities for volunteering. As I mentioned, there is a wide range of sport clubs but if you decide to not join one, you still have a lot of opportunities for commitment. For example, if you are interested in football, you can play with your departmental society, play in an intra-mural league or play as part of residence sport program if you live in university accommodation.

Sheffield.
Sheffield is not a very big city, so you can save a lot of money by not using public transport, as everything is not far away from you. Products in the shops are also quite cheap. The city is very green and beautiful with a lot of opportunities for night life.
